Now that you are about to save some money at the supermarket, please make sure that it does get “saved.” Often there is a tendency that once one saves some money one goes out and spends it!
(1) We were amazed at this, but it is true, if you go to the supermarket daily, you will spend more money! That’s right; in general, 40 % percent of purchases are impulse buys. Plan on just going once or twice a week, to take advantage of sales and to get more perishables such as fresh fruit and vegetables. And just like your mother used to tell you don’t shop on an empty stomach—you do buy more.
(2) Bring your own grocery bags, not only to help save the planet, but also because some supermarkets will deduct ¢5. off of your bill per bag that you bring.
(3) When you see the sign “2 for $5.” Or “2 for $3.00″ and so forth, don’t think that you have to buy 2 items, they will give you the half price for only purchasing only one of the items. When you get to the check-out line, just watch the register to make sure you get that sale price.
(4) You don’t have to wait to get the coupon and sales items via the Supermarket circulars that come to you by mail or in your newspaper. Just go to the website of your favorite local supermarket, typically they post their circulars online a week in advance.
(5) By being organized you can save time, money and avoid impulse buys by having your fastest, easiest and most cost-effective recipe handy. Have copies of them in your car glove-box, your purse or briefcase, so that when you go grocery shopping you know what you need, and aren’t trying to figure-out what you will make for dinner while strolling the supermarket aisles.
(6) We know that you have hard of bulk shopping, in order to take advantage of sales on certain non-perishable items, so you can stock-up in advance. But here’s a great tip for a more advanced step to saving money. Place several clear plastic storage boxes on your pantry closet shelves of your kitchen. On the front of each box, tape your recipe for a favorite family meal. Write a check-off square next to each ingredient of each recipe. For example, let’s say one of the recipes is for “Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce.” Now, when you go to the supermarket when there is an opportunity to buy bulk of a dried Spaghetti pasta, you do so, and put the boxes of pasta in the box, not only do you save money you also save a huge amount of time, so when it’s time to cook that meal all the ingredients that don’t need to be refrigerated are right there in the organizer!
